Letters from Families- Testimonials

Dear Easter Seals,

My son attended camp 2 years ago and is still talking about how wonderful it was.  We missed last year but now he hopes to become “a regular”.  The last time he attended, I made it quite clear that I wanted him to just have fun and not be concerned about all of the day to day chores and restrictions that he faces.  I am always telling him to “stop drooling, wipe your mouth, stop lapping your hands, and wear your orthotics”.  I told the counsellors that he didn’t need to worry about any of that – just have FUN!  When I picked him up at the end of the week, he was completely filthy with pizza on his face as he was playing a game.  His feet were brown up to the knees from running around barefoot all week.  He was the happiest that I had ever seen him because he was able to just have fun!  Thank-you so much for giving my child this freedom.
At school he needs to “always be on task”.  As a parent, I am always raising the bar a bit higher so that he can achieve that much more.  Thank-you for being his “happy place” to just be a kid
Warmth and Hugs.
Kindest Regards

It is a great opportunity for my daughter to feel independent from Mom and her sisters. It is her thing and her's alone. She gets to try new things and be good at them because they are geared to her abilities. She gets great positive feedback on the things she does and feels genuinely accepted by the counselors and other campers. She talks about the things she does at camp for months afterwards and starts looking forward to it months before hand. The friends she makes at camp are special and expand her social network.

This was our first experience with camp. All services that have been available for my child has been in the form of learning/coping strategies for him and our family to learn. My son was absolutely thrilled to learn that he had somewhere to go where the only expectation (outside of appropriate behaviour) was to have fun and be a child. This was absolutely fabulous for his self esteem and gave him endurance and a refreshed look at coming back to the grind stone of working on all the appropriate strategies to manage his disabilities.

Thank you with all our being to the staff, volunteers and the organization for transforming my child into a loving individual who also loves Camp.

Everyone needs to have the chance to spread their wings. We found that camp let our little guy just be himself, not a son or a brother. He came home and started doing things that before he had asked for help and now he would try on his own first.
We are parents of an autistic boy and we were worried about our son not being able to separate from us for longer then a couple days. Also dropping him into a group of strangers was worrisome. To our delight he took to Camp Swanigan like a duck to water.

It teaches these kids that they can have "real life" experiences and that they are not alone with the challenges that they face daily. They are also treated as "equals" by the terrific staff

My child can relax and be himself  without the worry of being bullied or teased. It is wonderful for his self esteem, and we can relax knowing he is having a great time. He can't wait for the next year. The staff are all so friendly and helpful and make you feel welcome.

He has a truly unique experience that he doesn't get elsewhere.  He is truly himself and feels like he he just one of the guys.  The good time that he has experienced at camp is talked about in our home for weeks!!!!

I am so excited by this camp.  The welcoming and accommodating environment that you have created here blows my mind.  You have provided a safe and judgment free environment where kids of all abilities are able to come let loose and just embrace life!
